She’s literally just come off the runway from her London Collections menswear show and is becoming a force to be reckoned with in British fashion, as she says ‘treading the monumentally versatile line between Vogue and Vice.” We sit down with Katie Eary in her East End studio to talk muses, the dark side of life and mess around with a set of false teeth.
WHAT INSPIRED YOUR SS13 COLLECTION?
Death and decadence.
DO YOU HAVE A MENSWEAR MUSE?
At the moment it’s A$AP Rocky.
WHAT KIND OF MINDSET DO YOU HAVE TO BE IN BEFORE YOU START DESIGNING?
I have to be quite relaxed to let new ideas in. I tend to go lock myself away after a show for a month to totally unwind in order to start designing the next season.
WHAT INSPIRES YOUR CREATIVE SIDE GENERALLY?
Food and animals, haha!
YOU HAVE PREVIOUSLY FOUND INSPIRATION IN THE LIKES OF ADDICTS, RENT BOYS, DOG FIGHTING AND A DARKER SIDE OF LIFE. WHAT DRAWS YOU TO THIS?
I love finding beauty in sadness and ugliness, maybe it’s because deep down I have always been a sad human being. But you have to find a positive and so I turn it to my advantage.
IS FASHION EDGY ENOUGH – SHOULD IT EXPLORE A DARKER SIDE MORE?
I think fashion needs to chill out a bit, all these cruise, pre fall, fall etc. shows are a bit overkill, maybe sort that out first and then make fashion exciting again. It’s getting too corporate and all about money money money.
WHO DO YOU ADMIRE IN THE FASHION WORLD?
Hmm, Carine Roitfeld, I love a successful powerful woman! And I think Givenchy does menswear well obviously!
HOW DO YOU COPE WITH PRE SHOW NERVES?
Citalopram and food!
ARE THERE ANY AVENUES THAT YOU WANT TO TAKE YOUR CAREER DOWN THAT MIGHT SURPRISE US?
This year I am going to be concentrating on branding with packaging and the quality of the product. I’m really excited about it – expect bloody good bags and tags! But I’m also talking to lots of amazing new stockists, RSVP, Mr Porter and the like so stay tuned to find out…
