Feminist, activist, icon: Gloria Steinem’s story to be told in biopic

Gloria Steinem’s life is one you can learn a lot from: so what better chance than in a movie all about her.

It has been announced that the film will be directed by Julie Taymor, the mind behind Frida – a 2002 Frida Kahlo biopic with Salma Hayek in the title role – and Across the Universe – a musical rom-dram that includes over 40 Beatles compositions in a captivating manner. A coming-of-age memoir based on Steinem’s My Life On the Road, it will focus on her activist beginnings and the events which shaped her along the way.

As Steinem described “I can’t imagine anyone more magical than Julie Taymor – or more understanding than Lynn Hendee and Sarah Ruhl…so now that we are on this journey together, I hope and believe the result will encourage many more travellers – especially women in all our diverse realities – to tell our own stories”. Taymor praised Steinem right back, telling of how her book was “vividly cinematic…also witty and provocative. From reluctant spokesperson to a beacon of positive change, hers is a singular journey – an American leader who can speak to us all”.

A writer, lecturer, feminist organiser, political activist, Steinem is responsible for the founding of Ms. magazine, aided founding New York magazine, as well as a contributor for numerous publications and producer for eye-opening documentaries like Private Violence (2014), AKA an icon. The biopic looks to be enlightening in how Gloria Steinem became the activist she is today, and we can’t wait. Stay tuned for more info.
