Five songs that shaped me: Siobhan Bell

Model, DJ and music producer Siobhan Bell takes us through the songs that have soundtracked her life – from her go-to break up tune to self-love anthems..

“Never insecure until I met you, Now I’m bein’ stupid, I used to be so cute to me”

Growing up I wasn’t the most developed looking girl and I would drown myself with over sized clothes so I could hide being skinny and small, but TLC looked just like me. They inspired girls who looked like me. The single addresses the struggle with self-image and unrealistic standards of beauty in the media. This is so important, especially today, as we have so many social media outlets like Instagram that can change our perceptions of beauty and make us feel insecure. This empowering song encourages women to overcome physical insecurities that do not blend with society’s expectations. This is truly an anthem for self-worth!

“After I got my advance, I just wanted to shine, Jay favorite line: “Dawg, in due time!” Now he look at me, like, “Damn, dawg! You where I am!”

Touch The Sky is an upbeat song on the struggle, giving hustlers and dreamers something to help hold their head up to while staying steady on the grind. This song just reminds me that we all have a journey and without a journey there is no success or celebration. This song is like ‘I made it here because I believe in my dreams and now I can go do and dream more.’

“Money on my mind, Money on my mind (Chea) , Money on my mind, Money money on my mind (yea) , Money on my mind, Money on my mind (that’s alright).”

We all like money and nice things. Although this isn’t all that I work towards, money is definitely a motivational factor for me. Lil Wayne likes to remind everyone that he’s a “self-made millionaire,” and that you should “want to step out the motherfuckin’ car looking like a star, too.”

“Thank God you blew it, I thank God I dodged a bullet, I’m so over you, So baby good lookin’ out”

This is my go to breakup or departure song. It puts me in the right state of mind and always reminds me that I need to own my self worth. At the end of the day, I have to trust my instincts and not dwell on outside opinions.

“Don’t you know that there ain’t no mountain high enough. Ain’t no valley low enough, ain’t no river wide enough. To keep me from getting to you, baby”.

This is my top motivational song that helps me to remember my goals! There may be obstacles along the way, but you can overcome them to reach that final goal.
