Marni distorts perception for SS17

Reinventing the classics at Marni.

[F]or SS17 Consuelo Castiglioni took us on a journey of colour and proportion, reinterpreting classic wardrobe staples and turning them into something fresh and bold.

They said: A colour utopia, traveling from white to black in the span of monochromatic silhouettes. Gently distorted forms let body and dress talk differently. Pulling cords to redefine a shape. A flap that folds into a waist-skirt. Belts and panels that dangle. Satchels worn around the waist like an utilitarian pannier.

Our verdict: Each season Marni gives us a lesson in simplicity and elegant modernity, and for SS17 this came in the form of reinvented staples. The dress, the jumpsuit, the trousers and the jacket. All twisted into something new. Starting in a range of whites and neutrals before melting into yellow, green, blue and eventually black proportions were distorted to create a collection of new shapes. A beige jacket worn backwards was cinched at the waist and given a utilitarian twist with oversized pockets on the chest and arms, while on a printed green dress a rope cord pulled at the thigh to create gathered volume. The double bag hangover of last season is carrying over but this time big is better, and that goes for your sunglasses and statement earrings too.

Best moment: The oversized and the mismatched. The big pockets and saddle bags attached to trousers, the assorted earring styles, bug-eyed glasses and voluminous dresses and jumpsuits. There was little that we weren’t fans of.

Who walked: Girl of the moment Lineisy Montero was joined by rising star McKenna Hellam, Kai Newman, Jess PW and Yasmin Wijnaldum.
