Can you tell us a bit about your studio project in Seven Sisters?
So last year myself and Lakosa managed to secure Arts Council funding to build a load of studios in Seven Sisters. We had both rented small studios for a number of years in London. We just wanted to build something that people could create, network, and feel comfortable in. It’s probably the most stressful, grown up and rewarding thing I’ve done…It’s called Ten87 studios.
What are your thoughts on the business side of the music industry right now? Does digital/the Internet make things harder or easier for new talents?
I mean, you could argue either side. I think the Internet has levelled the playing field. Anyone can pick up software for free, watch a load of YouTube videos, produce music on a computer and show it to the world on Soundcloud. It’s made the art of producing and creating more inclusive. So in that respect its made it easier for kids starting out compared to when I first started in music. However it’s also way more competitive than say ten years ago.
The business side of the industry is in a state of flux, it’s a pretty exciting time to be involved. I think there are more people creating and consuming than ever before, so that’s got to be a good thing right…?
Who would be your dream collaboration?
Im a big Koze fan…a remix from him would be a dream for sure. I think a collab with Leon Vynehall would be pretty awesome. But if we’re talking anyone, I would probably pick Thom Yorke!
What can we look forward to from you in the next year?
Aside from this next EP, I’ve also signed a collab EP with Lakosa (out on 20/20 again). Remixes from Seven Davis Jnr, Ron Bassjam, and a reprise version… can’t wait for people to hear.
After that I’ve got another four track EP of originals on 20/20, that will be out around the end of the summer I think…Then an album.
Can you tell us a bit about the mix you have crafted for us today?
I had a lot of fun recording this. It’s pretty much recorded live in one take. It’s definitely a journey. It starts off quite slow and melodic and builds into the more hard hitting stuff. Perfect to listen to before a night out, or something to get you through the day.
