Carrie Cleveland – Your Love Will Set You Free
I heard this song at a party recently and I was blown away. I don’t know much about Carrie Cleveland, but I know I like this song a lot.
Marvin Gaye – I Want You
Sexy. Enough said.
Brian Eno and David Byrne – Regiment
What they were doing on their My Life In The Bush of Ghosts record was so way ahead of its time it’s hard to fathom.
Portishead – Chase The Tear
Maybe not one of their better known songs, I think it was a charity single, but it might the the best thing they’ve done. A perfect combination of dark krauty synth bass and Beth Gibbons’ always-amazing vocal.
Caribou – Your Love Will Set You Free (c2 RMX)
Carl Craig’s remix takes this already ace song to another level.
Arthur Russell – Get Around To It
Only he could make cello this danceable.
Broadcast – Black Cat
I came to Broadcast pretty late for some reason, but I was obsessed with the album Tender Buttons a few years ago. This is one of the best tracks from it.
Beck – Chemtrails
He can turn his hand to pretty much anything, but I’ve always preferred his more introspective, melancholy side. Insanely good drums on this track.
The Flaming Lips – Feeling Yourself Disintegrate
From The Soft Bulletin, one of my favourite albums. The percussive ‘brap bap baps’ that open the song are just genius, and it ends with one of my favourite guitar solos.
Dionne Warwick – You’re Gonna Need Me
I first came across this because it’s sampled on Stop by J Dilla. Sultry 70s soul at its finest.
