To accompany this exclusive remix for Hunger TV our very own Eva Pentel shot indie rockers Swim Deep and we touch base with the boys.
WE LAST MET YOU IN JULY, WHAT HAVE YOU BEEN UP TO SINCE THEN?
We’ve been touring constantly and writing some new music which we’re very excited about.
SINCE BEING SIGNED HAS YOUR MUSIC CHANGED?
I don’t think it’s really changed too much but it has grown a little and we’ve definitely grown as musicians so there are some changes.
HAVE YOU FOUND THAT YOUR CREATIVITY AND VISION FOR THE BAND HAS BEEN SLIGHTLY CONTROLLED SINCE SIGNING?
No not at all really. We have a great label, we get each other really well and we’re pushing ourselves to be more creative. It’s definitely a time to be more experimental I think.
YOU HAVE BEEN TOURING THROUGHOUT SEPTEMBER, HOW DID YOU FIND SPENDING ALL THAT TIME WITH EACH OTHER – WHO HAS THE WORST ON THE ROAD HABITS?
It’s actually not that bad we all get on pretty well on tour. Everyone has a little cry now and then but that’s okay. Our crew probably have the worst habits – they all snore real bad!
WHAT WAS THE CRAZIEST CITY/VENUE YOU PLAYED WHILST TOURING AND WHAT WAS THE MOST MEMORABLE THING TO HAPPEN?
We played Benicassim in Barcelona and we clashed with the headliners Beady Eye so we expected there to be no one there but it was mental! Possibly the biggest and craziest crowd we’ve ever played too.
WOULD YOU SAY YOU ARE MORE OF A PERFORMING BAND OR A RECORDING BAND?
It’s important to be both I think but we’ve been working on our live show a lot recently. People tend to go see bands live now over buying their album so it’s important to be great live.
WHO DO YOU SEE AS COMPETITION?
The Arctic Monkeys.
DESCRIBE THE SWIM DEEP FAN?
They’re cool cats.
PHOTOGRAPHER DAN KENDALL RECENTLY CAPTURED A YEAR IN THE LIFE OF SWIM DEEP IN HIS ZINE I KNOW I AIN’T COOL RIGHT NOW. WHAT MADE YOU WANT TO GET INVOLVED WITH THIS, WHY WAS IT IMPORTANT AND HOW WAS IT HAVING A PHOTOGRAPHER FOLLOW YOU AROUND FOR A YEAR?
Well Dan shot the first ever Swim Deep video ‘King City’ and he immediately became a really good friend so it was great having him with us on tour all the time and due to him being a friend, having a camera in our faces all day just felt natural. I think it was important to capture our first year and music.
YOU ALSO MADE A DOCUMENTARY WITH TEN SWIM DEEPISODES – CAN YOU TELL US ABOUT THESE?
It was an idea that Dan and Austin come up with together because of Dan having so much footage. It’s always nice for fans to see what you’ve been up to. They’re pretty much all videos of us doing stupid stuff.
IN LIGHT OF THE ABOVE TWO PROJECTS, DID YOU TAKE PART IN THEM BECAUSE YOU FEEL THERE IS MORE TO MUSIC THAN JUST WRITING AND PERFORMING, IS IT A LIFESTYLE?
I think music is an art and there’s lots of different aspects and sides to music such as photos, videos, artwork etc. It’s good to take part in them as welL as writing and performing. I think it’s a lifestyle if your band Is headlining Wembley.
LAST TIME YOU MENTIONED ALBUM NUMBER TWO – HOW IS THAT COMING ALONG AND WHAT CAN WE EXPECT?
We’ve been writing a lot and recording demos. It’s going really good actually, we’re all pretty excited. It’s a bit different. I described it the other day as a bit more ‘out there’ but I don’t even know what that means…
YOU DESCRIBE YOUR MUSIC AS FEEL GOOD – NOW THAT IT’S WINTER WHAT WILL YOU BE DOING TO FEEL GOOD?
Watching Christmas movies and drinking egg nog.
