See Penelope Cruz as Donatella Versace in ‘American Crime Story’

Check out the new teaser trailer.

[P]enelope Cruz has been cast as Donatella Versace in the forthcoming TV series Versace: American Crime Story. The show will investigate and recount the 1997 murder of Versace founder Gianni Versace who was killed by Andrew Cunanan on the steps of his Miami Beach home. Versace is known to be the final victim of a killing spree by Cunanan during which he claimed at least four further victims. Ryan Murphy’s series will be based on the book Vulgar Favors by Maureen Orth, which tells the story of Cunanan and his victims with evidence from over 400 interviews and thousands of pages of police reports. The news that Cruz will be playing Donatella follows Murphy quashing rumours that his former collaborator and Versace friend and muse Lady Gaga would take the role.

Today we got our first sneak peak into this new show, with a thrilling teaser trailer. A mysterious first look, we see Cruz embodying the platinum haired matriarch as she mourns for her brother surrounded by an abundance of flower arrangements. Murphy spoke recently of the intimate nature of the show, explaining that “I think we’ve been very respectful to his family, particularly, Donatella had some requests about how the children were depicted in the show. I listened to that. As a father, I understood. I wasn’t interested in going there, out of respect for her.” We’re sure the show will be an interesting tribute to the late designer, especially with Cruz depicting the iconic Donatella Versace.

With no set release date yet, the series is likely to air in the first part of 2018, for now check out the trailer below.
