[C]o-curated by Shonagh Marshall and Holly Hay of The Ground Floor Project, Posturing: Photographing the Body in Fashion explores the role of the female body in contemporary fashion photography. Decoding a trend that has come to define 2010s fashion imagery, Marshall and Hay have mined the archives of seminal publications including British Vogue, i-D and Interview to describe how the body has been contorted and manipulated and how pose, gesture and posture contribute to the power of the image itself.
Split into five thematic sections – casting, styling, location, props, and art direction – Posturing examines the intimate relationship between different elements of the photograph and how each part of the creative process manifests itself in the final each.
The project is the first of a three-part creative partnership in collaboration with THE OUTNET. The second part is a film – Filming the Body in Fashion – to be exclusively screened at Art Basel Miami and the third is a book, Posturing: Writing the Body in Fashion to be released in March 2018. See the exhibition at 10 Thurloe Place, London, SW7 2RZ from Thursday, November 2 – Sunday, November 12, 2017.
