[D]OPEBOYLDN is a UK rapper breaking codes and conventions of the genre, claiming (and owning) a new space for himself as outspoken, unafraid and with bars for days. We last spoke to DOPEBOYLDN about smoking weed and his ties to internet culture and now we’re kicking off 2017 with a premiere of his new video for ‘SOFBN (Sick Of Being F*cking Nice) directed by Jordan Rossi.

Hey, when can we listen to Sweet Poison? How’s the recording going?
Sweet Poison will be released when I feel it is the right time. I have the last two tracks in progress, it would have been one but I wrote a track not too long ago called ‘NO MAN” which fit with the EP. It fit so well that I had to add it. Pretty much like to give myself more work haha.

Sick of Being Fucking Nice is understandable – what else are you sick of right now?
Being tired to be honest with you. So much going on right now at the end of this year would be nice to breath. But saying that it’s very unlike me to not go out with a BANG!!!
What’s on your current moodoboard? What are you drawing inspiration from?
I don’t tend to follow anything ever. I’m conscious and aware of what is trending or what is the ‘in thing’ but that’s just kind of sitting there. I want to do what comes to my head and get it down in writing. I’m crazy and live with many crazy creative people….. which is probably my hub of ideas to be honest… as everyone is always going to something. From Builders to models to music to stylists to actors. I could go on … there are 30 of them.
What was your favourite element of shooting this video?
The minimalism, because in comparison to my crazy 19 hour day shooting BO$$ BOYS, S.O.F.B.N took you back. It’s stripped back from styling (and don’t get me wrong, the garms are dope), people and location. The craziness that sucks you in is the way it is shot and the editing and with all the lighting going crazy. It kind of takes you on a massive adventure and then comes to a sudden end. It relates to the track a lot, like when you are sick of being a nice person… you get angry…you start loosing control a bit and that’s what builds from the beginning to the end.

You reference Zebra Katz in your lyrics for SOFBN, what other rappers are you admiring right now? Who’s really pushing the limits?
I’m on a lot of people right now. I feel like I’m dipping in ALL the pies. I definitely have to say ABRA’s new material is shit hot. All the way from NEW YORK MR JAY BOOGIE is slaying. I would really like to work on a track with this guy. I mention a lot of people in my songs on the new EP. Expect mentions of people like…. Rihanna, Nadia Rose, Paigey Cakey, JME, Drake…. I like to reference good musicians! Cause if you get a mention it means I’m listening haha!
Where can we find/hear/see you in 2017?
Well I’ll be shooting my next music video around January time next year, I will also be releasing the EP next year FOR SURE!! I have a collaboration with MISS DEFIANT coming out next year… so listen on your radios and get on YouTube as the video will be releasing for that too!!
I have a big performance coming up on the 27th of February at Congress House at Tottenham Court Road. It’s the 50th Anniversary of LGBT history month so more than honoured to close the show.
