Secret stillness: A polaroid series by Kellylouise Delaney

Kellylouise Delaney is a writer and photographer based in Brooklyn.

Her observed street photography captures moments of stillness in otherwise chaotic environments, where subjects and passersby are often unaware or unbothered by her lens. The result is a series of composed, ghostly images filled with blank spaces and unknown characters. Read Kellylouise’s description of her work and see some images below. “My favourite photos that I’ve taken sum up to a mix of the world being still, and people who don’t realize I’m photographing them––or really don’t care. I like to capture people the way I see them, but I’ve found that the presence of a camera warps a person’s expression. We’re all afraid of how we’ll look on film, when really we always look as perfect as we’ll ever be. It’s just hard to look into a lens with honesty. So I like to catch people off guard, and capture scenes that feel new to me, or somehow explain where I’ve been. I love the way buildings sink, and how signs bend and deteriorate.” – Kellylouise Delaney
