Stunning portraiture from Indianapolis by Aliza Brown

Romance and empowerment through photography -->

[A]liza Brown is a photographer working out of Indianapolis. Her portraits both romanticise and empower her subjects, with multiple images of the same subject offering a spectrum of emotion that offers something altogether more human than a single, objectifying image.

We caught with Aliza to find out what kind of pictures she likes to take and what’s going on in Indiana right now. Follow Aliza on Instagram here and see more of her work below.

Hi Aliza, what’s inspiring you right now?

I get inspiration from everywhere, as of lately its been music and people. I can listen to a song and visualize a certain look and concept based on a song, which may lead into videography one day. When I see someone I want to shoot I usually ask them about themselves and it helps me come up with a concept.

What kind of people do you like to shoot?

I enjoy shooting people who have a eccentric look or feel to them, I feel that those people make the pictures more interesting.

What’s going on in Indianapolis right now?

There’s a lot more going on in here in Indianapolis than most people would think. When I tell people I live in Indiana they all think I live on a farm in the middle of no where. There’s a whole art scene thats filled with talented people. I just went to a show case a week or two ago, they happen almost once or twice a month. Then every first Friday of each month in fountain square there’s art galleries and performances etc. It’s a lot of fun, everyone can see art and network. So there’s a lot here for people with artistic vision, our art scene is growing.

Which other portrait photographers do you admire? Is there a particularly portrait that has had a major impact on you?

The photographers I’m in love with are Lily Cummings and Petra Collins. They are both phenomenal female photographers, I hope I can meet them one day or just even get as good as them.

There isn’t a certain portrait that has had a impact but Petra’s style has a little. I just love how different she is and that she hasn’t changed it even when she’s worked with major people and brands.

Which accounts do you follow online?

my favorite accounts on Instagram when it comes to photography are @goldenpolaroid, @exquisite_eye and @arisjerome. They are all so talented and each are all different and have either own style.

What kind of camera do you use?

People are surprised to find out that I use a canon rebel t5, which is a basic starter camera. before that I was taking pictures on my phone. i got my camera on a limb, I was moving back into my moms house at the time and had extra money so I went out and bought the one I could afford. so I’m saving up to get a newer body, but I haven’t decided what I would get.

Great, thanks Aliza.
