10 questions with futureproof LA artist Maya B

This is the antidote to production line pop.

Maya B is making music from the future. Her skittish single “Selenas” could soundtrack a warehouse rave scene in a movie set in post-apocalyptic LA. Her most recent release – “Kiss on my Neck” – meanwhile, is futureproof slow jam.

Combining progressive production, tender lyricism and shimmering pop vocals, the LA artist’s sound is an antidote to production line pop. Listen up below and follow her here.

Describe your music in three words.

Art. Emotion. Imperfect.

Who is your greatest influence?

That’s a hard one. One of my influences musically would be Missy Elliot. I grew up loving the boyish provocativeness, but I turn to folk singer Angel Olsen for her incredible lyrics and transparency. My greatest influence in life (who also happens to be a musician) is for sure John Lennon. I love how he spoke of peace and how we’re all interconnected. In a world of constant consumption, his message sticks with me and really inspires me to see the bigger picture.

Who was the last person you called?

My landlord.

What did you talk about?

Well, my door is hella old and keeps locking me inside my apartment. So, I have to like karate kick it in order to leave my apartment. So, yeah we’re trying to get that sorted out haha.

Would you rather have time or money?

Definitely time.

What’s one item of clothing you couldn’t live without?

I just thrifted these amazing, shiny, cherry red cowboys boots and I never knew I needed them.

What’s the best way to spend $10?

Best way to spend $10 is on a little meal at Chick-fil-A. Thank me later.

How about $100?

A big meal at Chick-fil-A. Just kidding, haha. Thrift shopping all the way.

One album you couldn’t live without?

Half Way Home – Angel Olsen.

What’s happening next for you?

Right now I’m working on the music video for “Selenas” and preparing for the next single.. 🙂
