Whether you a buy into Freud’s theory on dreams or not, no one can deny they are a deeply fascinating aspect of the human mind. The mystery that surrounds the dreamlike state each of us enters into each night has been inspiration to many artists before and now The Cob Gallery are doing their bit to explore the realm of R.E.M. in the hope of unraveling some of the deeper aspects of dreams and their affect on our waking state.
In Dreams is an immersive interactive installation, focusing on the varying modes of dreaming, from those terrifying but common lucid experiences we’ve all encountered through to ones induced by the dropping of a little LSD – perhaps not so common. However you may have got there though, dreams have long since been thought to hold the answers to our unconscious mind and in our quest to understand what they mean we have all happily delved into dissecting details of our nighttime adventures.
The breadth of work soon to be displayed at The Cob ranges from William Burroughs, Jean Cocteau and Salvador Dali, extending to beatnik poet Allen Ginsberg and fashion photographer Juergen Teller (now there’s a dinner party we’d like to attend!) with the aim of unearthing the secrets of the subconscious mind. This unique collaboration sees the gallery teaming up with the Guts for Garters gals who run the part shop, part exhibition concept art experience also housed at The Cob, and should be an exciting and successful venture for the two.
As well as the exhibition there will be opportunities for the public to really get involved with a variety of events being held throughout the duration of the showing. Additionally, they will also be conducting sleep experiments, which is certainly taking the interactive nature of the show and Shakespeare’s old rub ‘to sleep perchance to dream’ to a whole new level, but should yield some very interesting results. For those not brave enough to take part in the mind games on offer and prefer the comfort of your own bed in which to dream, you can simply immerse yourself in the maze-like surrounds of what is sure to be a very intriguing experience. Freud would certainly have a field day with this one!
In Dreams runs from 7th-27th July at The Cob Gallery in Camden
