Apparently my boyfriend is now Zayn Malik,” says Zendaya, laughing and rolling her eyes. “Oh yeah, ‘He’s my best friend; we just hang out all the time’.” She is, of course, commenting on the rumour that’s doing the tabloid rounds the day of her Hunger shoot. But it turns out that “Zayndaya” will have to be put on ice — Zendaya has never met Zayn, or even been in the same place as him at the same time. “You’ve just got to laugh because that’s something you can’t avoid, and it sucks, but I have to get used to people making stuff up about me,” she says.
And if the equation more famous = more rumours is correct, Zendaya will have to get used to it rather fast. We’ve all heard of a triple threat in the entertainment industry, but we’ll have to invent a new term (quintuple threat?) for Zendaya, because the 18-year-old does it all. Actress, singer, dancer, producer and now shoe designer (with her stylist Law Roach), Zendaya has been in the entertainment industry since she was 12, graduating from smaller parts and a co-starring role to her own Disney show, K.C. Undercover, which debuted earlier this year.
It’s her next venture, though, that looks set to send her stratospheric: her sophomore album. Currently in the studio with Babyface, Diane Warren and Timbaland — who between them have contributed to the careers of the likes of Justin Timberlake and Whitney Houston — Zendaya is likely to be catapulted into the same league as Rihanna and Taylor Swift, the latter of whom is already a close friend and asked Zendaya to be in her “Bad Blood” video. By all accounts, superstardom is in Zendaya’s near future, and if her steely determination to nail every shot on set is anything to go by, we can attest to her ambition.
