The Matrix 3.0: Neo is officially fashion’s new muse

Get ready for the cyberpunk redux.

[W]e never thought we’d turn to Keanu Reeves for style advice. But that time has come. His character Neo in 90s dystopian classic The Matrix is suddenly fashion’s favourite muse. Your essentials to master the dark and dangerous look this season? Slim-shades, floor-length black overcoats and a black shoelace (a moody selfie doesn’t go amiss either).

We first spotted the emo-occult trend doing the rounds on the SS18 catwalks – from Ashish’s witchcraft-inspired eveningwear to Alexander McQueen’s dramatic dress coats.

Taking the micro-trend one step further, the recent menswear shows in London, Milan and Paris have been awash with Matrix vibes. See Palm Angels’ cyberpunk goths in Neo-esque skinny shades (check out our exclusive chat with the mastermind behind the cult brand, Francesco Ragazzi here). Japanese-born designer John Lawrence Sullivan was also a fan of the tiny sunglasses circa 1999 look for AW18 too.

It’s not just on the catwalk the Nu Rebellious movement is catching on. Kim Kardashian has swapped her oversized glasses in favour of more trend-driven frames. In a recent episode of Keeping Up With the Kardashians she told her BFF Jonathan Cheban, “(Kanye) sent me a whole email like, ‘You cannot wear big sunglasses any more. It’s all about tiny little glasses. He sent me, like, millions of 90s photos with tiny little glasses.’”

Well, if it’s good enough for Kim and Keanu…
