The Nordic Cool-Girl’s Guide to DIY beauty
Minimal magic.
[L]ess is more beauty hacks? The Scandi-girls have it down; think minimal makeup and squeaky clean complexions. Nordic street style regular and editor of MINT journal Irina Lakicevic’s is often hailed as Cool, Calm and Collected in-between catwalk shows. Her skincare regime is no different. “If you should find yourself in Norway, Sweden or Denmark there are couple of brands that are more than noteworthy,” she tells Hunger. “I personally stick to two of them – Elixir Cosmeceuticals that swears on nothing but science and offers a great range of products based on light acids that peel, moisturize and balance. Tromborg do great serums and know what skin needs in climates as cold as in Scandi-land.” From a simple lemon hit to surprisingly effective organic switch-ups to make, here’s your go-to guide to nailing your selfie game this winter the Nordic way, according to Lakicevic…
Mix and match your nail art
“Keep your manicure playful. Scandinavians are notoriously known for eschewing make up, however if you have visited – let’s say Copenhagen lately – you have probably noticed that there is a note of feminine playfulness that balances out all those clean lines and muted colours. By painting each nail in different colour or variety of shades, it is easy to ad charm and a bit personality to the otherwise clean look.”
Stock up on citrus fruits
“If you take a glance around any city in the great north it is easy to spot that everyone is carrying their own bottle of water. Partially spoiled by great tasting spring water and partially brought up with the fact that hydration is the kindest thing you can do to your body, drinking at least 1.5 litres of water a day is the key to beautiful skin Scandinavians are known for. Lately adding some lemon to give a vitamin kick has been trending all over, so if you should ever visit any Scandi home note that abundance of lusciously looking yellow fruit in gorgeous bowls is not solely for decorative purposes.”
GO GREEN
“There is no doubt that less is more is a key beauty trend, however if one uses make-up it is likely to be a multitasking, organic product. Kjaer Weiss is a well-known and highly admired brand that offers some of the best blushes and foundations there are. I personally love their blush in ‘Joyful’ that I use on the cheeks and dab into lips for a fresh, yet easy-going look.”
EAT OUT LESS
“When you live in Scandinavia you learn from early on that you are what you eat, so most Scandinavians prefer cooking at home. In that manner one knows that only ‘good’ stuff is in your food and the whole experience of eating is a more enjoyable one when you have done it yourself. Scandinavians swear to organic, in season food and 5-a day (at least), thus me and my boyfriend spend a lot of time in local markets in search for tasty leaves, salads other exciting flavours.”
