Theia’s new video is all about rollerskating and recovery

Meet the Ramp Tramps.

New Zealand pop prospect Theia is back with a new video. Enlisting the support of 2019 style icon and rollerskater Sailor Gonzales, the visuals for empowering pop banger “Bad Idea” follow an LA rollerskate set on a disorientating journey through LA – all palm trees, blue skies, bruises and kneepads.

The video is a playful and uplifting counterweight to the content of the song itself, though. Whilst the production puts the track squarely into the realm of mid-summer, drop-top drive time, the lyrics are an abstract exploration of Theia’s personal struggles with depression and self-harm. The release of “Bad Idea”is the artist’s way of showing support to those out there who may also be suffering. Check out the video, see a bunch of behind the scenes photographs and read Theia and Sailor’s words on the project below.

Theia:

“When I started to think about the visuals for ‘Bad Idea’ I knew that I wanted to use skating. The song is quite heavy in its content and I didn’t want the video to be a literal interpretation. So skating felt like the perfect metaphor for life – sometimes you fall over; sometimes you get straight back up on your feet and other times you need a bit of a helping hand. I searched for a long time online for a skate crew and one day I came across a Vogue article, which featured this amazing LA-based skater and fashion designer Sailor Gonzales. I loved her so got in touch her on social media. We started talking long distance about how we wanted to bring my vision to life and I just knew right from the get-go that Sailor was the one to do it”

Sailor:

“Working with Theia has been a dream come true. From miles apart, we landed on the same page. I will be forever in awe with how trusting she is with her instinct. I couldn’t have thought of anyone better  to work on this project alongside. I coulnd’t have asked for a better team, and am forever grateful.”
