This new documentary tells the story of Andy Warhol’s $3 million Brillio Box
From $200 to $3.3million.
[A]ndy Warhol’s infamous pop-art sculpture of a Brillio Box is to star in its own documentary on HBO. The film airs tonight in celebration of the iconic artist’s 89th birthday yesterday. The Brillo Box, first exhibited at the OK Harris Gallery in Soho, New York in 1964 was initially available for sale at just $200. In 2010, the same box sold at Christie’s New York for $3.3 million.
Filmmaker Liane Skyler’s parents bought the Warhol Brillo box in 1969 for $1,000 but promptly exchanged it for a piece of work by another artist. The piece has been changing hands and rising exponentially in value ever since. Skyler’s 40-minute film intercuts its story with insights on Warhol’s legacy and the market for his work from leading experts on the artist.
