I’ve seen your music labelled under various genres, but the one that always gets said is “Alt RnB”. How does that sit with you?
I feel like that genre itself is a little passé at this point. But I think I would never try to dictate anyone else’s listening of it or what genre they ascribe it. I’m just happy that anyone cares to listen in the first place. If they want to call it something that means something to them then I’m totally down for it. I’m just mashing together as many things that I can, things that have genuinely influenced me and meant a lot to me. I hope that at least one of those influences comes through.
Like Seal? I saw the video you did with him.
Absolutely, that was completely surreal.
Yes and then at the end he calls himself your biggest fan, that must have felt great.
It was ridiculous. I still can’t believe that happened. I can’t even tell you how it came about, i’m not even sure. I had been talking about what an influence he was to me, because you know lyrically he’s on a different planet, obviously he’s a black male who came into the scene and the fact that he was from London and stuff for Americans to see that, someone so blatantly throwing stereotypes out the window, it completely contradicted the image of the black male in society.
You’re right, it did.
And he challenged masculinity in general, just by being honest and vulnerable. It completely blew my mind. Everyone tried to say oh he’s RnB, just because he’s black, it’s just so obviously not. He was just Seal. I honestly can’t remember how it happened but I was suddenly at his managers house and he was like “we should do something and we should film it today.” I was in shock.
