[C]indy Sherman mastered the art of self-reinvention decades before Instagram was even a thing. Using a camera and transformative make up, styling and art direction skills Sherman’s art is to present herself in multiple guises, often warped versions of famous women or archetypal females. Her visionary work has only become more relevant with time as we’ve entered the age of social media and the chance to contrive and manipulate our lifestyles and appearances through digital means.
For ultimate re-invention inspiration you can now follow Cindy Sherman on Instagram. The artist has just made her profile public, revealing an intense, 600-piece exhibit that emphatically carries her work into the digital space. Mingling amongst family portraits, inspirations and a video of some turkeys, Sherman’s self-portraits are all the more disarming and an incisive comment on Instagram culture. As Artnet points out, whilst there are close similarities with Sherman’s “official” artworks, the images posted on Instagram also represent a slight shift in tone. The images are a much tighter crop, suggesting use of the phone’s front-facing camera, a genuine selfie. Furthermore, the images are more personal that we’re accustomed to seeing from Sherman, especially when interspersed with seemingly genuine documents of family life. For instance, Sherman poses in a hospital in one image with the caption “On the mend.” It’s a rare and privileged insight into the private life of a famously private artist.
