Feathers, safety pins and footy kits – here are 2024’s weirdest Emmys outfits

Hollywood's finest have made their way down the red carpet at the 75th Emmy Awards - and some celebs are turning heads for all the wrong reasons.

The 2024 Awards season is officially in full swing, with this year’s Emmy Awards surrounded by the glitz and glamour of celebrities’ best looks. On 15 January, Hollywood’s favourite faces walked the red carpet outside Los Angeles’ Peacock Theater in gowns and tuxedos that didn’t fail to turn heads.

In July 2023, we learned which shows and movies were nominated for Emmy Awards, with HBO’s beloved Succession walking away with more than 13 acting nominations. Later that year, it was announced that the awards show would be pushed back from its usual spot in September, due to the writers and actors strike.

After a four-month delay, the outfits for the occasion did not disappoint. The event also set the scene for further emerging fashion trends, as it followed an impressive Golden Globes red carpet earlier this month. Although each celebrity embraced their own unique style when walking the red carpet on 15th January, some approaches were more popular than the rest.

We learned that red won’t be going anywhere this season, as it proved to be a favourite among attendees, with Grey’s Anatomy alum Katherine Heigl, Abbott Elementary’s Janelle James, and Daisy Jones and The Six’s Camila Morrone and Suki Waterhouse all stunning in simple, yet elegant red gowns. Old Hollywood glamour was also on display on the red carpet, with many stars arriving in their best satin skirts, feathered dresses, and silver or gold statement necklaces.

However, we’re most interested in the most unconventionally dressed. From Aubrey Plaza to Issa Rae, these are some of the most eye-catching outfits from the 2024 Emmy Awards.

Aubrey Plaza

The actress and a star of The White Lotus had a colossal pin stuck through her pale yellow-green Loewe look. If the accessory looked familiar, it might be because the Past Lives director Celine Song had a similarly large pin through her Loewe skirt at the Golden Globes.

Ayo Edebiri

A leather texture and an inverted tulip shape made the “The Bear” actress’s Louis Vuitton dress a little more interesting than your average black strapless number.

Issa Rae

In an interview on the carpet, the actress and an executive producer of A Black Lady Sketch Show said she wanted her Emmys look to give a little drama. Her flowing Pamella Roland gown covered with feathers and crystals achieved that (and then some).

Nick Mohammed

Ted Lasso stars Sam Richardson, Nick Mohammed, Jeremy Swift, Cristo Fernández, Kola Bokinni, James Lance and Billy Harris all rocked up at the Emmys last night. And surprisingly, villain Nick decided to wear a AFC Richmond jersey under his suit and somehow, blokecore made it to the Emmys.

Laverne Cox

Orange is the New Black star Laverne Cox, who was hosting E!’s red carpet coverage, was described by some as looking like she was wearing a “garbage bag”.

Emma Brooks

The influencer gave the illusion of baring everything in a bedazzled bodysuit that was moulded to her body outline, worn beneath a semi-sheer skirt.

Dan Harmon

Rick and Morty creator Dan Harmon went for a pink shirt and bright red tie, which is, of course, rather uncomfortable on the eye.
