If you told Jake Bugg six months ago that he’d beat Leona Lewis in the race for the number one album slot, he probably would have laughed at you. Nottingham boy Jake may be the creme de la creme of the music industry now, but it wasn’t always that way.

After being picked to perform on the BBC Introducing Stage at Glastonbury in 2011 Jake was signed to Mercury Records, stuck on Radio 1 playlists and even soundtracked a beer ad. Sure fire way to the top right? Nope. When it came to chart success it wasn’t to be. Not one song made it on. Nada. But luckily for Jake the music world is a fickle old place and despite his lack of chart success, someone was paying attention. In May Jake appeared on Later…With Jools Holland before being asked to support Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds on tour. And it seems that that was the remedy needed; on 22 October Jake’s self titled debut album hit the top spot in the UK album charts. Easy as that! We had to get in on the hype so Jake popped by the Hunger studio to record this exclusive live performance of ‘Lightning Bolt’ for us. You’re welcome.
