10 of Karl Lagerfeld’s most iconic Chanel campaigns

As the King of Fashion, Karl Lagerfeld, once put it: “Why not make your own pictures?” Since the German fashion designer took over Chanel 1983, he set out to radically shake up the industry – not just through his standout collections season upon season but also, from 1987 onwards, choosing to shoot the fashion house’s campaigns himself (an unprecedented move at the time for a head designer). A master of fashion advertising, he’s shot everyone including OG ‘supers’ Claudia Schiffer et al and Cara Delevingne in the most glamorous of locations, from Coco Chanel’s Paris apartment to LA. A new book published by Thames & Hudson ‘Chanel: the Karl Lagerfeld Campaigns’ offers an unrivalled overview of the house of Chanel as seen through the eyes – and lens – of Karl Lagerfeld himself.
