10 Questions with alt-pop rising star RIKA

At just 18, RIKA is changing our poppy perceptions, and is ready to break down the boundaries in music and beyond.

Scrapping the idea that pop stars have to look, act and sing a certain way, RIKA is done with the stereotypes and ready to make some changes in the industry. Hailing from Indian and Serbian parents, the singer is standing up to the lack of Asian pop stars by making herself known, and showing that music is a powerful creation. Rising to fame after writing a song about the Syrian children’s plight, RIKA found a place to express her interests, her empathy and her skill. Bringing together her intricate musical talents and understanding of just what 2018 wants, RIKA is ready and waiting for more. Dropping her latest track, ‘On My Way’,  she showed off her artistic aesthetic and catchy style in vibey new visuals, which you can check out down below. We caught up with the star to find out what it means to make pop music in our current world, and just where she’s off to next…

Describe your music in 3 words…

Fresh. Cool. Catchy.

Who’s your greatest influence?

I have many but one of them is Mariah Carey! She is to me one of the greatest vocalist and singer songwriters of our generation. I mean, her 18 Billboard #1’s don’t lie.

What does music mean to you?

As cliched as it sounds, music to me means everything. It’s all I want to do. It’s such a universal language, and connects so many people together. I’m very grateful for it.

Who’s the last person you called?

My mum haha.

What did you talk about?

What she was cooking for lunch! I was out for a meeting and was in need for a homemade meal. Mum’s cooking is the best!

One item of clothing you couldn’t live without?

A pair of sunglasses! Am I tired? Am I not? Who knows.

One album you couldn’t live without?

The Space Between by Majid Jordan! I LOVE that album!

What’s your favourite way to spend £10?

A small pizza is only £9.50 🙂

How about £100?

Going to Topshop!

What’s next for you?

Lots of cool amazing stuff I can’t talk about yet, but if you follow me on my socials  you’ll be the first to find out 😉
