10 Questions with Joshua J

Get to know the Dr. Dre co-sign now...

Citing Chance the Rapper as his muse, the rising rapper Joshua J is merging vibrant melodies with mellow moods as seamlessly as his idol ever has. Think pioneering sound, original concepts and authenticity beyond belief: Joshua’s latest offering, 1998, is the exemplification of his style in its most sincere form. From piano playing at the age of 6, and DJing at 12 to opening for the likes of Col3trane, the sharp rapper rose from his humble beginnings in foster homes to creating cathartic music to move forward with. A vocalist, producer and editor, Joshua J fully delves into the creation of his work, from the first lyrics to the visual filming to the label release via his own, CMP (Custom Made Passion) Records. We meet the self-made star, who just happened to win over one Dr. Dre too, as he releases his brand new LP and steps into his future…

Describe your music in 3 words…

Who’s your greatest influence?

Chance The Rapper. Besides the fact that I love his music, I also admire him for being an independent artist. He inspired me to be independent myself.

What does music mean to you?

Music is everything to me. It’s what drives me to get out of bed in the morning to make something for myself. I can’t remember the last day I spent without music; it’s like a best friend.

Who’s the last person you called?

My mother in law.

What did you talk about?

My girlfriend & I. We’re currently in a long distance relationship and she’s supporting us to get through it.

One item of clothing you couldn’t live without?

My EarPods

One album you couldn’t live without?

My debut album ‘1998’, like literally. It’s my life story on a record.

What’s your favourite way to spend £10?

Surinamese food.

How about £100?

Surinamese food for my friends & I – and if it’s doable i’d take them to go see a movie after 🙂

What’s next for you?

I would really like to tour internationally and meet fans in foreign countries. I really hope that that is what’s next!
