The Nigerian alté scene star is back with a new hit with RAYE, 'Tipsy'.

Odunsi (The Engine) should really already be on your radar: the 22-year-old artist, songwriter and producer first made waves back in 2016 with his debut EP Time of Our Lives and has since evolved himself into brave new territories. A chart sensation in his homeland of Nigeria and in Ghana, the rising star is back blending darker elements of R&B, soul and pop art. Released today is ‘Tipsy’, a playful Afro-fusion sound brought to London with the lilting tones of RAYE’s. “‘Tipsy’ is one of my special records because I express myself through a different style that I usually never have,” Odunsi explained, “and working with RAYE made it even more special”. Describe your music in 3 words…

Eclectic, Expressive, Groovy.

Who’s your greatest influence?

My greatest influence is a hard question because I’ve had many over the years but if I had to name a few it would be Pharrell, Prince and Sade Adu 3.

What does music mean to you?

Music to me is like a channel to freedom. You have the freedom to design your own world or narrative and bring other people into it. It’s like an alternate universe and it doesn’t matter where they are from, people can always relate to it and understand because it’s a universal language. Music just represents freedom to me.

Who’s the last person you called?

My Mom.

What did you talk about?

Just checked up on her and catching up.

One item of clothing you can’t live without?

A white T-shirt. It’s an essential for me. I can always put it on and feel comfortable.

One album you couldn’t live without?

The 1975 – I like it when you sleep, for you are so beautiful yet so unaware of it.

What’s your favourite way to spend 10 pounds?

On a vanilla milkshake.

How about 100 pounds?

On Clothes.

What’s next for you?

I want to connect with my supporters around the world, play shows, tour, meet people and work on collaborations. I want to discovers other parts of myself in fashion, visuals and music.
