5 Minutes With: Deptford Northern Soul Club

The DJ outfit on the tune that's guaranteed to get the party started and their London venue of choice.

Having established themselves as leading authorities on the genre, Deptford Northern Soul Club are continuing to get the party moving across the UK. The duo, comprised of childhood friends, Will Foot and Lewis Henderson, have been spinning tracks for over five years and recently, announced their biggest appearances yet, at Hackney’s EartH and Manchester’s New Century Hall.

Their hard-hitting setlist of soul bangers are what have cemented their reputation as some of the nation’s must-see DJs — and as I have discovered from attending many of their nights at Dalston’s MOTH Club, you can expect revelry, joyous perspiration, and… a hangover. If you’re not up for a big one, but love soul, check out their re-issue label, Deptford Northern Soul Club Records/DNSC.r, which was created with a view to reintroduce some of the most coveted, rare and unreleased, soul, funk and proto-disco, and at quality to boot. Here, HUNGER catches up with Will and Lewis for a five-minute chat.

Describe what you do in 3 words.

Soul for now.

What’s the perfect Deptford Northern Soul Club night? Who would be there (dead or alive)?

All of our regulars and Alice Clark!

What are the three records you keep coming back to time and time again?

At the moment I’m obsessed with Della Humphrey’s ‘Let’s Wait Until Dark’. Another one we’ve been coming back to over the past few years in our sets is Lucille Mathis,  ‘I’m Not Your Regular Women‘, we actually just put it our on our label. And finally, this is just a classic for us; ‘The Salem Travelers, Give me Liberty or Death‘.

What do you think is the sexiest song ever written?

Cindy & The Playmates, ‘Don’t Stop This Train’.

What’s the best gig you’ve been to recently?

We’ve been seeing Robocobra Quartet a lot recently, they are a ‘post-punk’/’jazz’ band from Belfast with the mantra ‘No Guitars Allowed’… It’s really something exciting they have got going on.

What record would you save in a fire?

Charles Simmons, ‘Save The World’, it’s got everything, sublime…

Favourite venue in London right now?

We have a real vibe at our monthly nights at MOTH Club at the moment. It’s cult-like! And it’s happening!

Favourite DJ right now?

For modern stuff, then Yaeji. For the radio experience then Sonic Tapestries. And for a one-off show then I heard this amazing show of Mexican Motown, thanks to Louise from Prima Queen for tipping me off about this.

If the crowd isn’t vibing, what’s the song that always gets people in the mood?

Sebastian Williams, ‘Get Your Point Over‘ is always a great track for us… very uptempo and a good way to ease people into dancing.

What artist/record can you not get enough of right now and why?

Personally, I’d have to say Ethics, ‘Look At Me Now’. It’s just the best ever.
