Anne Hathaway and Michaela Coel to star as lovers in new A24 film

Hollywood fave Anne Hathaway and Chewing Gum star Michaela Coel are partnering up for the new A24 film Mother Mary. The internet is already buzzing with ideas of what the plot could include, as it has been announced the two will be starring as a lesbian power couple.

“We are seated,” read the Tweets reacting to the news. “Babe wake up! Anne Hathaway and Michaela Coel playing lesbian lovers in upcoming movie news just dropped,” says another.

What we know so far is that it will be directed by David Lowery, known for The Green Knight (2021) and Pete’s Dragon (2016), and is described as an “epic pop melodrama following a fictional musician and her relationship with an iconic fashion designer”, as reported by Deadline. The Devil Wears Prada star Hathaway will flip her fashionable script to play the pop star, whilst Coel will be the innovative fashion designer. 

Even though she will be singing all the songs herself, this is no new feat for Academy Award-winning Hathaway, as audiences found out she had an immense set of pipes in her in roles such as Fantine in Les Miserables (‘I Dreamed A Dream’) and the lead in Ella Enchanted (Queen’s ‘Somebody to Love’). 

Set against the backdrop of the music world, the soundtrack will be co-written by pop princess Charli XCX and Jack Antonoff, music producer and songwriter for the likes of Taylor Swift. Pop perfection is undoubtedly in the works. 

As Lowery revealed he had written the script a while back, we hope the multi-faceted creative Coel has had her say – especially after the success of her screenwriting in the drama I May Destroy You (2020) and the comedy Chewing Gum (2015). 

So as the cast begins their filming in Germany soon, we sit back and wait for the magic to hit our screens in the highly-anticipated announcement of the UK cinema release dates.
