At least 28 killed by suicide bomber in Pakistan mosque attack

Police fear the death toll may rise, with at least 15 others in critical condition.

At least 28 people have been killed and 150 injured after a suicide bomber struck a mosque in Pakistan.

The bomber detonated his suicide vest while a large number of worshippers were inside. Local police officer Zafar Khan said the mosque’s roof caved in due to the severity of the explosion, injuring dozens.

“A portion of the building had collapsed and several people are believed to be under it,” he added.

The bombing took place in the capital of the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province bordering Afghanistan, while no one has immediately claimed responsibility for the attack, local police said.

A spokesperson for the Lady Reading Hospital in Peshawar, Mohammad Asim, said they were treating 90 injured people, with up to 15 of them in critical condition.

Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif condemned the bombing in a statement while also vowing “stern action” against those responsible.
