Balenciaga rattle the internet again with their $1,790 ‘trash bag’ pouch

Demna cements himself firmly on the throne as luxury fashion's king of controversy.

If you’ve been on Twitter within the past 24 hours you’ve probably come across Balenciaga’s latest concussion, the aptly named Trash Pouch. And yes, it is quite literally a luxury bin bag.

Demna has pushed the world-renowned brand into the stratosphere since taking over as creative director in 2015, however, he’s also riled up a ton of controversy for his questionable and pricey designs at times. Although, this is something the designer revels in as he told WWD, “I couldn’t miss an opportunity to make the most expensive trash bag in the world, because who doesn’t love a fashion scandal?” In that case, it’s mission accomplished for Balenciaga.

Obviously, the Trash Pouch isn’t your bog standard bin liner, it’s made from supple calfskin leather and comes in an array of glossy colours, providing slightly more excitement than your Poundland bin bags. The eyebrow-raising accessory comes in four different colours: black, white and red, blue and black, or yellow and black. Oh, and it also retails for $1,790, so we’d probably advise against using it to line your bins.

As with every single controversial luxury item, the Trash Pouch has caused a massive uproar online. The usual jokes have been thrown around with Twitter users describing the brand as a “morbid social experiment.”

“Balenciaga designers walk through homeless camps and turn their circumstances into fashion. ‘The trash pouch’… for $1800…. YOU DEADASS!!!!,” tweeted one clearly unhappy individual. “Balenciaga dropping that trash bag pouch is sooooooo dumb,” wrote another.

“Someone at Balenciaga needs to be jailed immediately for designing them bullsh*t trash bags and selling it for $1800,” added a third.
