BREAKING: Boris Johnson agrees to resign

Pressure had been mounting for Johnson throughout the night.

The BBC’s Chris Mason has reported that Boris Johnson will resign as Prime Minister today. Though, he allegedly wants to stay on as PM until a new Tory leader is elected by the party conference in the autumn of this year.

This is likely to incite intense debate in the party. Per the Guardian, the former Brexit minister, Lord Frost, has already said that it is unsustainable.

Johnson’s expected resignation comes after newly appointed chancellor Nadhim Zahawi told Johnson to “go now” amid a vast swathe of resignations including Sajid Javid, Rishi Sunak, and Brandon Lewis. “This is not sustainable and it will only get worse: for you, for the conservative party and most importantly of all the country,” he said in a letter to the Prime Minister, which is believed to be one of the first documents he has signed on treasury notepaper.
