BREAKING: David Carrick given 36 life sentences, will serve minimum of 30 years in prison

The former Metropolitan Police officer pleaded guilty to 49 offences taking place over 17 years.

David Carrick has been given 36 life sentences and will serve a minimum of 30 years and 239 days in prison before being considered for parole. The sentencing, imposed by Mrs Justice Cheema-Grubb, took place today at Southwark Crown Court.

The 48-year-old abused multiple victims over 17 years, all during his career in the Metropolitan Police. Carrick was sacked by the Met in January for gross misconduct and the force apologised for failing to identify and remove him. He’s now regarded as one of the UK’s most prolific sex offenders.

He pleaded guilty to 49 offences, which represent more than 70 instances of serious sexual offending. They include 24 anal rapes, five vaginal rapes, 19 oral rapes and other sexual assaults, many of which were committed “during controlling and coercive and relationships.”

At the start of a two-day sentencing hearing on Monday, prosecutor Tom Little KC said Carrick’s first known rape took place little over a year into his service as a constable.

The judge said Carrick broke the “trust and security” that would normally exist between people in an intimate encounter. Mrs Justice Cheema-Grubb also stated that Carrick has not expressed any remorse or regret for his prolific offending. She said his offending could be described as an “unrestrained campaign of rape against women.”
