As Simone de Beauvoir once said, “one is not born but becomes a woman”. What it boils down to is that it can be hard for women to untangle their genuine selves from years of social conditioning and scrutiny from under the male gaze. “Devenir Femme” directed by Effy Kawira is an editorial that aims to inspire womxn to embrace femininity on their own terms through self-expression and unapologetic style.
The photo series’ vibrant colour palette depicts a blossoming into womanhood while still preserving the flamboyance and innocence of one’s inner child… Think: the joy of opening up the childhood dress-up box but with much better clothes.
