Enter the Valley of the Dolls with @tatianaroseart

Think you’re good at makeup? This Australian MUA is serving retro glam to over 179,000 fans on Instagram…

Drawing on disco, pinups and icons of the silver screen, Tatiana Rose’s IG is an homage to the analogue glamour of the 60s and 70s. The Australian makeup artist’s best-loved looks feature matte eyeshadow, glossy lips and babydoll lashes, embodying an unabashed femininity that brings to mind underground classic The Love Witch or pulpy melodrama Valley of the Dolls with a dash of Lana del Rey, naturally. Elsewhere, there are the kind of glitter-drenched eyelids and bouncy curls that make us think of Studio 54 at its peak. In short, if you’re into retro beauty then open Instagram and smash that follow button on @tatianaroseart.

We slid into the MUA’s DMs to talk about her signature style and taking cues from Monet.

Describe your style of beauty in three words…

Vibrant, undone, nostalgic

What are your inspirations?

I’ve always been super fascinated with the arts including old shows and film production. The way they use costumes and makeup to create a character and the perfect mood is so inspiring.

What’s the wildest makeup look you’ve ever done?

I once did a full body paint of a Monet-inspired painting on a model.

What’s one beauty product you can’t live without?

I love mascara so much, mascara even on its own is a look.

How vital is Instagram for your industry?

I love how it connects you with people, and to show your work and what you can do. Whether it’s finding people to work with in the future or just people who admire the art. Likeminded or not. It’s perfect for that and important to me.

What’s your personal definition of beauty?

Beauty is a personal thing, sometimes people feel the most beautiful with (or about) something that no one else can see! But creating beauty to me is using what you have to enhance or even create new personas and styles that are still all a part of your own self.
