Everything we know about the new ‘Cruel Intentions’ TV Show

With the cast list announced yesterday, HUNGER is breaking down everything you need to know about the updated 90s classic.

Cruel Intentions – the 90s classic teen movie – is getting a 2023 update. The 1999 version was a modern retelling of Dangerous Liaisons, which explored the early years of narcissistic rivals and ex-lovers who use seduction to control and exploit each other. The original starred Sarah Michelle Geller, Reese Witherspoon, Selma Blair, Ryan Phillippe, and Joshua Jackson, who were then all up-and-coming stars. But it was the salacious and dangerous storylines jam packed with a mega-hot cast at the private LA high school for the rich that really won over fans. The soundtrack was the epitome of 90s and 00s cool, featuring the likes of Placebo, The Verve, Garbage, Manic Street Preachers, and The Cardigans.

This time around, Amazon Prime (who are launching the show) has announced its new cast members, with a set of characters completely different from the original. We predict, however, the premise of the good girl, bad boy, and even worse stepsister will remain, and steamy moments will frame the whole thing.

The show is set to include Sarah Catherine Hook as Caroline (from the vampire film First Kill); Zac Burgess as Lucien (from the teen TV series Totally Completely Fine); Khobe Clarke as Scott (from the Netflix series Firefly Lane); Brooke Lena Johnson as Beatrice (from the Netflix series You); as well as Sara Silva as CeCe (from American Horror Stories).

The only cast member in both the series and film is Sean Patrick Thomas, who originally appeared across from Selma Blair as her music teacher named Ronald Clifford. Behind the screen, there is also one name that stands out – Neal H. Moritz – who produced the movie and will now executively produce the series. According to an exclusive from Variety, this TV version follows: “Two ruthless step-siblings who would go to great lengths to stay on top of the social pyramid. In this case, their focus is the Greek life hierarchy at an elite Washington, D.C. college. After a brutal hazing incident threatens the entire Panhellenic system, they’ll do anything to preserve their power and reputations, even attempt to seduce the daughter of the Vice President of the United States.”

Whilst the release date of the TV show is still unconfirmed, the show is set to start filming its eight episodes this month and will drop on Prime in due time. Will we get the 2023 version of the iconic Blair and Geller kiss? An even better soundtrack? An on-and-off screen romance with the two protagonists like Witherspoon and Phillippe? Only time will tell.
