Everything we know about the new Safdie Brothers x Adam Sandler Netflix movie

The team behind the hit A24 Crime Thriller Uncut Gems are back working on an exciting new project for Netflix.

Following the success of Uncut Gems, which won Adam Sandler the award of Best Male Lead at the 2020 Independent Spirit Awards, the Safdie Brothers (Benny and Josh Safdie) and Adam Sandler are back working together on a new Netflix project. The Brothers, despite producing a few recent shorts, haven’t worked on a large-scale project since the release of Uncut Gems in January 2020.

The new project is still being kept largely under wraps. However, the team has announced that the film will be “set in the world of high-end sports card collecting” and rumour has it, it will be set somewhere in New York in the late 1990s. Though, filming is said to be taking place in LosAngeles, California.

Sandler confirmed that he would be working alongside the Safdie brothers again in an exclusive interview with Entertainment Weekly, but refrained from giving too many details stating: “I don’t want [the Safdie Brothers] to ever say, ‘what the hell did you tell them that for?’” Clearly conscious of keeping the project as secret as possible, Sandler didn’t give much away, although he did hint that he isn’t “going to look that handsome in it”, suggesting the film is going to be looking into another gritty, underbelly subculture.

There is still no confirmation on when the film will start shooting, however, ProductionList.com have stated that production may start in early April 2023 — despite the script reportedly being unfinished. Sandler has already said that he believes the filming process will be long, due to the importance the Safdie Brothers place on attention to detail in their films.

Adam Sandler is now well-known for working closely with Netflix. After signing a deal with the streamer in 2014, the majority of his previous work is now exclusively available on the service.

The Safdie brothers have been working on an exciting new A24 television comedy series The Curse alongside Emma Stone and Nathan Fielder, in addition to the upcoming Netflix project. The show was shot in 2022 and will be released on Showtime – however, there is currently no release date scheduled.
