Express yourself: Five London club kids you need to know

If you’ve got it, why not flaunt it? That’s the message behind this new series of films shot by Jordan Rossi.

Showcasing some of the unforgettable characters on London’s LGBTQ+ scene, these analogue moving portraits are a celebration of the club kids who are breaking down barriers of gender and identity, and having a whole lot of fun while doing it.

“For me, the queer scene is a place where people of all backgrounds can come together to celebrate our individuality. It has been a space where I have explored my gender, creativity and self expression in ways which are not generally accepted within mainstream society yet. Of course, the scene is problematic in its own way, but for me it has opened doors for my own expression in really exciting ways.”

“People’s eyes are more open than ever, the old rules of gender no longer exist so they are more willing understand the creatures I create. I’m free to paint my oddities without the worry of people still trying to sex them. The gaze is now about how I paint and build the faces, distorting the line of reality rather than identity.”

“Expressionism for me, is just an exercise to do something really stupid and pointless in the name of art (drag) and hope someone somewhere down the line get it. I don’t take myself seriously.”

“To me the way I express myself by using my drag is to act out as many characters cartoons and animations as I can. I love acting and to me,

Drag is another way to explore personalities I may not have and see how they can help Josh (my real name) in the future… and also have a camp old time whenever possible.”

“I find creating looks a great form of self-expression. Through painting my face I can be an exaggerated version of myself, or explore a totally different persona. I can be cute, fun, daring or provocative, and challenge perceptions. For me, the club kid art form is ultimately about making bold creative choices and running with them.”
