Five Songs That Shaped Me: Kate Stewart

Formerly releasing music under the moniker KStewart, Kate Stewart's EP 'In The Beginning' (out 23rd November) marks a new chapter. Below, the soulful R&B star takes us through the songs that have soundtracked her life.

Sunshine Anderson – Heard It All Before

“I listen to this tune when I feel down. It’s one of songs that’s really uplifting and instantly puts me in a good mood when I hear it. Whenever this tune comes on in the club I wanna get up and dance straight away. Hopefully one day I can re create it in my own style, cos I want people to feel as happy as I do when this song plays.”

Whitney Houston – It’s Not Right But It’s Ok

“I grew up listening to Whitney Houston, her music was always playing around my house and I think she was the first singer that I heard that made me want to do music. The way she wasn’t scared or felt pressure to release ‘cooler’ music inspired me to do the same, and to always make music you feel in your soul rather than what the trend at the time is. For me this tune is my favourite of hers, because it’s super simple and understated, and her vocals are the main thing pushing through, which is really the most special part for me to hear.”

D’Angelo – How Does It Feel

“D’Angelo is one of my favourite artists of all time. I’ve always been about voice and melody, when listening to a song I never focus on the lyrics on the first listen. With D’Angelo I feel like his tone and melodies are the main thing that attract me to his music. This tune in particular has the most incredible melodies, he’s always adding in new parts and ad libs that send shivers down my spine, I feel like no other male artist to date has ever come close to such effortless R&B.”

Erykah Badu – Other Side Of The Game

“This particular tune made me wanna make R&B music. Growing up I listened to a lot of R&B, however pop music over shadowed any other genre, and being young I always thought being a ‘pop star’ meant you had to make mainstream music that radio would play. When I listened to Erykah for the first time, I felt something completely different, it made me feel relaxed and gave me goose bumps, the flow of her melodies where so at ease, I realised that was the style of production and writing I wanted my music to be like.”

Lil’ Mo Ft. fabulous – 4 Ever

“This has to be one of my favourite songs of all time. The beat is so groovy, it’s one of those tunes I wish I wrote myself. I listened to a lot of Hip Hop growing up and I feel like Lil Mo’s flow was so effortless. A lot of female rappers these days are very samey, that era of female rappers was a lot more musical, the fact her singing voice is just as good as her rapping, is something I wish I could do.”

Kate’s EP ‘In The Beginning’ will be dropping next Friday 23rd November
