Francois Nars on the power of the lipstick: “In a way, it is sentimental”

The iconic make-up artist tells HUNGER about his new and innovative formula for the Powermatte lipstick in an exclusive interview. The latest bold shades in the brand's fan-favourite product are sure to set hearts racing, and prove that Nars’ new ventures keep the brand "Laced with Edge".

Why is lipstick so important to Nars?

In a way, it is sentimental. I launched NARS with 12 lipsticks, and we have been evolving ever since. When I started the brand in 1994, I chose to do only lipsticks because I wanted to see how the public would react before launching a full line of makeup. I think it was a successful test – I never expected that!

What makes Powermatte different to other Nars lipsticks?

The new Powermatte lipstick formula is incredible. The colours are bold and audacious, and the cream-to-matte texture and potent payoff are an artist’s dream! I believe a strong lip always adds power to your look.

Why is lipstick such a staple product?

Lips are the new power move, and to me, lipstick is timeless. I always love a good red, a good nude, a soft pink, a pale pink… and the Powermatte collection offers just that. The shades reflect our most iconic colours and include a range of cult classics, new colours, and fan favourites.

Do you have favourite shades from this collection?

That’s a hard question! There are the classics I love like the vivid red of Dragon Girl – when I think of this shade, I think of someone who is powerfully glamorous. Also, Too Hot To Hold, which is a red so full of passion. And I cannot forget American Woman, a daring blend of decadent chestnut and provocative pink – this shade makes me think of someone who owns their freedom with femininity and confidence.
