From jumpy riddims to poignant introspection – kwn breaks down her debut EP track-by-track

The Walthamstow-raised artist has impressed with her debut project, which is perfect for those lonely late-night drives filled with self-reflection. Here, the 22-year-old breaks down the inspirations and experiences that provided the spark for her woozy EP.

nobody

My boy Jay Boogz sent this over to me and I thought it was really cool, so I wanted to do something on it straight away! I was going through a situation at the time where I felt invisible to someone and had to get them out of my head. The context of it is kinda deep, but It’s definitely a feel-good riddim to me.

sweetie

This was definitely a fun one to make. I usually just go with whatever my brain feels like that day but with sweetie, I went in there with the intention of making more of a slow jam. I wasn’t in a relationship then, so I had a bit of inspiration to draw from haha. I really enjoyed recording ‘sweetie,’ it brought me out of my comfort zone.

making love

I can’t lie, this one was written a good 3 years ago! It was the first time I actually felt like I’d made a decent song. Definitely a big moment for me, so I felt it had to be on the project, even though when I listen to it now, it feels so young.

venus pool

Clon3z sent me this beat and I thought it had such a sick groove to it. I wanted it to be short, so you could keep listening over and over. The concept for this one is again a juxtaposition. The beat makes you wanna move, but then the lyrics are quite deep.

wn way or another

Probably my favourite song on the project! It feels very true to me, both with the beat and lyrically. I was in a toxic relationship and felt like I was giving 100% and they were giving 0%. I learnt a lot about myself in that period of time. Another part of my inspiration for this was one of my favourite songs, ‘One Way Or Another’ by Blondie.

went wrong

Another fun one to make with Scribz. This was a tune we revisited after originally making it about a year ago. It’s such a jumpy riddim and feels closer to recent things I’ve been working on recently so I’m excited for people to draw for this one on the aux!

Rah, these answers sound boring when I read back over them; I hope you guys don’t think I am! I’ve come so far from this set of music. It feels like a lifetime ago. I hope you guys stay tuned for what’s to come.
