In the video for his latest single “Girlfriend” MNEK teams up with director Jordan Rossi to turn the tired cliche of the cheating boyfriend on its head. Inspired by 90s and early 00s videos from the likes of Destiny’s Child, Usher and George Michael the pair created a set reminiscent from this period in music video history to elevate the visual narrative for “Girlfriend”, while playing with the idea of what is considered a conventional relationship versus the fluid approach to sexuality that is commonplace today.
“It was really fun going back and forth with all these references and seeing how we could use them to elevate our video to the next level,” says Rossi of the video’s process. Taken from his critically acclaimed debut album, Language, the track is just yet another example of how MNEK is becoming an ever-important voice in both music and queer culture alike.
