Gold Fir presents club culture as a religious experience on new track “Mania”

Welcome to the new church.

Inspired by the collective, visceral euphoria of the dance floor, Gold Fir’s “Mania” draws the parallels between raves and religious ceremonies. The lyrics come from the perspective of an anarchic anti-hero, escaping the 9-5, walking away from social pressures and toxic relationships – an avatar for all of us.

The track itself opens with a sample from the notorious MC Robbie Dee, a fixture of the UK’s regional race scene of the early 90s. He represents the spiritual leader, inspiring his congregation with fired up ad-libs. Gold Fir describes the sample as a “holy relic”, a symbol of club or dance culture that has transcended time and arrived in 2019 as potent and urgent as ever.

From there, “Mania” draws on influences from across the dance music spectrum, tapping into sounds familiar from UK garage, house and synth-driven contemporary genres, progressing to a crescendo that – if you turn it up loud enough – might just inspire a numinous experience. Welcome to the new church.
