Grimes and Elon Musk secretly welcomed a second child last year

The baby girl's unusual name was inspired by the supercomputing term, exaFLOPS

Elon Musk and Grimes are parents to two! During a Vanity Fair interview, the singer revealed that she and the entrepreneur had welcomed a second child, a baby girl, born via surrogate in December of 2021.

At first, it appeared that Grimes was intending to keep the news private. The child’s arrival was accidentally revealed during the cover interview when reporter Devin Gordon heard a baby’s wail. “I’m not at liberty to speak on these things,” Grimes said initially. “Whatever is going on with family stuff, I just feel like kids need to stay out of it, and [son] X is just out there. I mean, I think E [Musk] is really seeing him as a protégé and bringing him to everything and stuff.… X is out there. His situation is like that. But, yeah, I don’t know.”

Ultimately, the 33-year-old conceded that the baby was “a little colicky”, and that she was able to keep her birth a secret thanks to the Covid-19 pandemic.

In keeping with their love of unconventional names, the Tesla boss and Grimes have named their second child, “Exa Dark Sideræl Musk,” and “Y” for short. She told the publication that her first name is a reference to the supercomputing term “exaFLOPS” — that is the ability to perform 1 quintillion floating-point operations per second. “Dark” refers to “the unknown… People fear it but truly it’s the absence of photons. Dark matter is the beautiful mystery of our universe.”

“Sideræl” is an elf-inspired spelling of “sidereal”, which she described as “the true time of the universe, star time, deep space time, not our relative earth time,” and a nod to her favourite Lord of the Rings character, Galadriel. Grimes added that they sometimes refer to their daughter as Sailor Mars — in a reference to Sailor Moon and her billionaire father’s desire to colonise the planet.

As per her relationship with Musk (the couple confirmed their separation in September of last year), things are complicated.

“There’s no real word for it,” the ‘Oblivion’ singer said. “I would probably refer to him as my boyfriend, but we’re very fluid. We live in separate houses. We’re best friends. We see each other all the time…. We just have our own thing going on, and I don’t expect other people to understand it.
