Haider Ackermann announced as the new guest designer for Jean Paul Gaultier

The designer of Timothee Chalamet’s iconic red carpet halter neck will take on new Gaultier couture.

The news that Haider Ackermann, the Colombian-born French designer, is stepping up as the next creative to design a one-off haute couture collection for Jean Paul Gaultier has been announced on the brand’s Instagram.

Gaultier stepped down two years ago after a career spanning five decades, and the brand has decided to continue to honour the immense legacy he left behind.

Filling the boots of Gaultier, Ackermann has been praised for his sophistication and eye for detail. Though seemingly different in approach to the boundary-pushing, unconventional and sexy silhouettes of Gaultier, Haider Ackermann SS20 made the perfect potion of tailoring and sensuality when playing with his midriffs and necklines. Given he can push the boundaries within his own work, the potential of his new design venture will be met with excitement by fans of both brands. Best known for his recent work worn by Timothee Chalamet — an unforgettable iconic red halter neck jumpsuit on the red carpet — his fans also include household names like Tilda Swinton and Penelope Cruz.

Ackermann will be following the likes of Balmain’s Oliver Rousteing and Y/Project and Diesel’s Glenn Martens who successfully paid tribute to the work of Gaultier in their stunning designs. Previously hailed for their progressive and experimental looks, it will be interesting to see how the signature tailored elegance of Ackermann meets the brand in this new turn for what is already proving to be a legendary career for him.
