Hailey Bieber has been accused of cultural appropriation over her “brownie glazed lips” trend

Fans online were quick to point out that the look has been popular amongst Black and Latina women since the 90s.

Hailey Bieber has been trending online as she faces backlash for her latest viral makeup look: “brownie glazed lips”.

The drama kicked off after Bieber posted a video on her TikTok last month, showing her using a classic combo of dark lip liner and her brand, Rhode Skin Glazing Lip Peptide, to complete the look. “Ready for all the fall things including brownie glazed lips,” Bieber wrote in the captionThe finished product swiftly caught the attention of beauty enthusiasts as people of colour, specifically those from Black and Latina communities, expressed their outrage at what they considered to be cultural appropriation.

Fans were quick to voice their concern over Bieber’s look on Twitter, with one individual writing: “white ppl calling brown lip liner w clear gloss Hailey Bieber lips or brownie glazed lips… Hailey didn’t do shit!! black and hispanic women have done this combo way before.”

“Brownie glazed lips is a “Hailey Bieber” look?! As if that shit was invented by her… All of these women right here have that same lip look and all of these photos are from the 90s sweetheart,” added another.

Bieber has never taken ownership of the trend, however, this isn’t the first time the model has been accused of cultural appropriation. Earlier this year, Bieber faced pushback over the glamorisation of the “clean girl” aesthetic of slicked-back buns, glossy skin and gold jewellery that Black women have rocked for decades.
