HUNGER PREMIERE: Kipp Boucher drops mesmerising visuals for ‘No God’s Sea’

Get to know 2018's answer to a rock 'n' roll crooner...

Brighton born and hailing from Hackney, rising artist Kipp Boucher has had a lot on his mind: collating his existential musings on the world inside and out of his head, the result is finally here, and it was worth the wait. Developing the darkness of his debut EP A Spirit of Decay, the 23-year-old musician has found his sound in the paranoid ‘No God’s Sea’, Kipp’s climactic new track. Merging experimental orchestral arrangements with his crooning vocals, Kipp Boucher’s latest creation is a sharply powerful taste of what’s still to come.

In a video directed by the star himself along with longtime collaborator Jon Prentice, we are taken on a visceral journey through Kipp Boucher’s stream-of-conscious offering. As he explains, “I guess every song I write helps to reveal a little more about my state of mind, which I guess can come across as a bit narcissistic, but I guess you’ve got to know how to use your gun before you can start shooting people”. Inspired by the likes of Leonard Cohen – who he feels “like I knew him as a friend, and like he’s a God-type figure that I’m not sure ever existed” – his ominous baritone echoes a Nick Cave-esque intensity and reflects Kipp Boucher’s diverse range of daring influences.

For the captivating visuals, director Jon Prentice and editor Joe Pettit brought their cinematic visions together to form the Lynch-meets-Godard surreal creation. “Originally we’d wanted to go to this place out in Kent called Dungeness, which is the closest looking thing we could find in Britain to the desert,” Kipp Boucher tells us “with the idea of creating some B-movie Western thing…that never really materialised – nor suited our £0 budget – so we ended up focusing more on the camerawork, trying like handheld crash and dolly zooms”. The lo-fi style plays with the Nouvelle Vague, from the Le Mepris-style walking shot to the playful effects, it’s a delicate ode to a time passed with a skilful relevancy worked in. Kipp Boucher’s artistic aesthetic and unflinching musical talent proves him to be one to watch for 2019 and ‘No God’s Sea’ to be the ultimate boundary-breaking track to end your 2018 with.
