HUNGER’s MVP of the week

Welcome to HUNGER’s Most Valuable Player, the place to find the best things to buy, watch, do or listen to each week. Forget about the hype, we want to separate what’s hot, what’s not, and what needs to be on your radar...

It’s that amazing time of the year when your accessory game is in need of a shake-up as we transition into the summer season. And while finding that perfect bag to compliment your fit can sometimes be a struggle, Daily Paper’s latest drop, the Cimbia Shield Bag, might just ease that burden. The Amsterdam-based label has released a limited edition bag shaped as their iconic shield logo. The logo itself is a modern interpretation of the Masaai shield, standing for heritage community and protection of everything you love by all means necessary. The cross-body leather handbag is made from black leather with an embossed shield, a detachable shoulder strap and silver zip detailing – making for a versatile summer accessory. The inside also features cotton lining with an extra cardholder pocket. The Cimbia Shield Bag is now available to purchase online here.

Next, Persia Educational Foundation and Film Buzz Festival have partnered up to announce the Iranian Women Life Freedom Short Film Festival. The festival will be the first of its kind in London since the inception of the #WomanLifeFreedom movement began in September 2022 and will showcase an array of short films by women in Iran – celebrating the world’s first women-led revolution. The selection of short films will delve into the reality of life in Iran today and offer insight into the events that occurred since the death of Mahsa Jina Amini. The festival is held on Friday, 23rd June, 3pm to 5pm, and on Saturday, 24th June, 10am to 12 noon, at Curzon Victoria. Hak Baker’s debut album, Worlds End FM, was released today and his boldest and most experimental project to date, with joy-filled tracks like ‘Doolally’ – which sees the artist taking us on an unhinged night out – followed by the touching ‘Windrush Baby,’ an ode to the power of generational community. While the project touches on elements of UK politics, Baker’s mental state is also placed under the microscope as the singer delves deep into his fragile mental state at the time of recording – particularly on the heart-wrenching ‘Dying to Live.’ On Worlds End FM Baker doesn’t succumb to the pressure that comes with the label “debut album,” instead, he thrives, curating his most focused and vibrantly detailed project to date.

Taking the crown as this week’s MVP is a festival that combines the mediums of art and music. Returning to Torino’s Parco Dora after last year’s sell-out event, Kappa Futur’s 3-day celebration is set to kick off with a bang to mark its 10-year anniversary. The impressive lineup will see the likes of Black Coffee and Major Lazer, as well as The Swedish House Mafia and Fatboy Slim. Meanwhile, house duo The Martinez Brothers and the enigmatic Peggy Gou will also be performing. The festival will also see the return of their digital art program, which debuted last year. Across carefully curated exhibitions, a whole host of digital artists will be presenting a series of works set to take attendees on a journey of movement and colour. So for all the electronic music and art fans this summer, Kappa Futur 2023 is set to be a year to remember. Purchase your tickets now.
