Nam June Paik (Opening Night)

Known for his experimental, innovative and playful work, Nam June Paik’s work has had a profound influence on today’s art and culture. He pioneered the use of TV and video in art and coined the phrase ‘electronic superhighway’ to predict the future of communication in the internet age.

This major exhibition will be a mesmerising riot of sights and sounds. It brings together over 200 works from throughout his five-decade career – from robots made from old TV screens, to his innovative video works and all-encompassing room-sized installations such as the dazzling Sistine Chapel 1993.

Born in South Korea in 1932, now living and working in Japan, Germany and the USA, Paik developed a collaborative artistic practice that crossed borders and disciplines.

Today is the opening night so if the buzz of an overcrowded gallery space, (or masses of queuing in the Tate’s case) isn’t for you the exhibition is on till February 9.

The Gaia Centre Presents – Giving

A night with a very important cause, GIVING is a fundraising event in collaboration with The Gaia Centre – the domestic abuse service for Lambeth.

Taking over the Ivy House for a night of live music and SE London’s finest DJs, including Baque Luar, the female vocalist collective; WOOM, a 4-piece vocal ensemble and Anja Ngozi & Maxwell Owin, the DJ duo who blend together a wide range of music.

The issue outlined by the charity:

Victims of domestic violence and abuse who need to protect themselves can obtain orders from the courts (like a restraining order) that prevent the perpetrator from going to the victim’s home or contacting them in any way. These orders carry the power of arrest if they are not listened to. It is free to apply for these orders from the courts however once granted, if victims do not have a solicitor, they have to pay for a company to ‘serve’ and explain the order to the perpetrator themselves.

People who are not eligible for free legal assistance through means-tested Legal Aid are being asked to pay £150+ for these orders to be served. People who are not eligible for Legal Aid often cannot afford this amount, especially due to the financial strain abusive relationships so often come with.

There have been significant cuts to Legal Aid, which is a direct impact of austerity and the Tory cuts to all our vital services.

This night aims to raise money to go directly into the hands of clients who will then have a protective order that, if breached by the perpetrator, can result in their arrest and potential charge and conviction. These orders can save lives, and there cannot be a barrier in clients utilising them for their safety.

Purchase tickets here and if you are a victim of Domestic Abuse living in Lambeth please contact the Gaia Centre on their freephone 24-hour helpline: 0808 2000 247.

Susan Hiller: Ghost / TV

Matt’s Gallery presents Ghost / TV an exhibition of objects and video by Susan Hiller that continues her investigations into the numinous, the ephemeral, and the personal.

At the time of her passing in January 2019, Hiller was due to start planning her fifth exhibition with Matt’s Gallery, following on from Work in Progress in 1980, An Entertainment in 1991, The Last Silent Movie in 2008, and Channels in 2013 – shows which introduced some of her most groundbreaking and iconic works. The exhibition had to be postponed, and Ghost / TV has been developed since then in close collaboration with Susan Hiller’s son, Gabriel Coxhead.

The exhibition will display a video, Running on Empty (2017), stems from Hiller’s commission to create Channels, a monumental audio-sculptural installation that incorporates 102 cathode-ray tube television sets programmed to play reports of near-death experiences. While constructing Channels, Hiller and Matt’s Gallery Director Robin Klassnik discovered one particular television set that spontaneously and intermittently communicated a haunting, poignant message of its own. Their attempts to document that elusive message, to recreate and capture the phenomenon on camera, even as the television’s functioning proceeded to decay and degenerate in a violent medley of colour and pattern, forms the subject of Running on Empty – a work which thus becomes about art-making itself, about processes of collaboration, moments of serendipity, and the pleasures of visual play.
