Jenny Holzer turns hypebeast

The American visual artist has collaborated with The Skateroom on a collection of limited edition marble skateboards to commemorate Trump’s impeachment.

Cult conceptual artist Jenny Holzer is one of today’s best-known female artists. In the 70s and 80s Truisms like “PROTECT ME FROM WHAT I WANT” or “Men Don’t Protect You Anymore,” emblazoned on public buildings or frequently circulated objects, were intended to disrupt the status quo. Since then they’ve come to embody a kind of Feminist-lite aesthetic as easy social media fodder which many of us discovered on Tumblr and Instagram circa 2015.

Her popularity with the iPhone generation might have depoliticised some of her works, but she has been keen to remain a rebel with a cause. In 2017 she teamed up with Virgil Abloh to make t-shirts in aid of Planned Parenthood and in October 2019 took to the Rockefeller Center to project words by poets and survivors of gun violence in protest of US gun law. Now, she continues this streak via a collaboration with The Skateroom, a company that creates limited edition boards bridging the worlds of fine art and street culture.

Commemorating the December 2019 decision by The House of Congress to impeach US President Trump, the artist has released 25 marble and 500 wooden skateboards carved with the word “impeach”. Holzer has previously been outspoke with her criticism of the Trump administration, previously teaming up with organisation March For Our Lives to launch a series LED-lined buses displaying messages about gun safety, given that this is an issue Trump has been inactive resolving.

Jenny Holzer’s Impeach skateboards can be purchased from The Skateroom as of 6 February. Further information can be found here
